Bissell PowerLifter PowerBrush is a powerful carpet cleaner that can deep clean almost any kind of carpet with Bissell’s unique and revolutionary DirtLifter powerbrush technology. The machine has 4 rows of rotating brushes that can effectively scrub tough stains and remove them with powerful suction.
In addition to being a powerful carpet cleaner, Bissell PowerLifter is also a well-built, easy to use and lightweight machine that can be used by anyone regardless of age and physical status.
Hence, although there are better and more powerful models (which we reviewed and rated here), the PowerLifter PowerBrush is recommended especially for elder people or those with back problems who could have a hard time using more advanced and heavier carpet shampooer models. It is also one of the cheapest models and can be an economic alternative if you are on a budget.

Detailed Features
Rotating Power Brushes
One of the best things about the Bissell PowerLifter is the deep cleaning it provides with 4 rows of power brushes that form a wavy pattern to deeply clean your carpets. The intersecting movement of the stiff brush bristles make sure that any dirt that penetrated the carpet can be scrubbed efficiently and brought up to the surface for thorough cleaning with a combination of hot water, detergent and powerful suction. Bissell uses this technology in other advanced models that cost a lot more than this one, and we were pleased to see that this low priced carpet cleaner features this technology.
Wide Cleaning Path
Although PowerLifter PowerBrush is a smaller and more lightweight model than most of other Bissell cleaners on the market, it provides the same cleaning path width (11 inches). This means that the machine provides the same efficiency, and you can clean your carpets with as few passes as a bigger machine would require.
2 in 1 water tank
This Bissell model is equipped with a single tank that holds clean water and the cleaning solution into the larger bladder in the center of the tank, while the dirty water gets sucked back into and collected in a separate housing that circles the clean water tank.
The good thing about this system is that it makes it easier to empty/fill the tank since you won’t be dealing with two separate tanks, and the bad thing is that since the capacity of both sections is smaller than the separate tanks you would find on more advanced models like Big Green, you will need to make more trips to empty and refill the tank.
Lightweight cleaner
Like we mentioned at the beginning of our review, this carpet cleaner is lightweight and easy to move around, especially when compared to other, bigger models. With a weight of about 17 lbs. it can be ideal for a quick pass and/or spot cleaning. It is our experience that users normally stop using heavier carpet cleaners for spot cleaning since those models can be too cumbersome, but with this lightweight model, you get the best of two worlds: a spot cleaner and a full sized carpet cleaner all rolled into one.
Satisfying cleaning performance
If you have to deal with extremely dirty carpets or very tough stains, the PowerLifter PowerBrush may not be the best solution as it cannot provide the same heavy-duty performance you could get from the likes of Bissell Big Green or any other similar model.
But if you find yourself cleaning your carpets regularly without having to deal with the toughest of stains, this can actually be the best choice in terms of performance, usability, price and convenience. It provides all the features you would see in more advanced models including rotating power brushes, hot water cleaning (without the ability to heat the water of course), and the ability to remove most of the deep stains, just with a little less power.
A long story short, you would be trading a little bit of cleaning power for convenience and a much more affordable price. We can definitely say that the PowerLifter’s performance delivers more than the low price tag warrants for.
Practical Tips
We have seen some users complaining about how the machine leaves hair, fibers and all other kinds of debris that should later be vacuumed during the cleaning. While we do understand how this can disappoint especially those who don’t have much experience with carpet cleaners, we feel compelled to explain that this actually proves that the machine does a good job in deep cleaning the carpets.
See, this machine is not a vacuum cleaner and therefore not designed to suck in materials like hair and fiber. It just finds the dirt and debris left behind by vacuum cleaners, sucks smaller objects in with the dirty water and leaves the bigger objects on the surface for easier cleaning. In fact, if it did suction stuff like hair and fibers, you would definitely have to deal with clogged filters, and spend a lot of time and money for maintenance and repairs.
Another thing we see a lot of people ask and complain about is the need to use Bissell cleaning solutions. Although it is always possible to use other solution brands and even homemade solutions, any problem caused by doing so would void the warranty, so it is definitely advised against. And to be honest, this is the case with all the commercial brands on the market. One good thing about this is that Bissell specifically designs the machines and the solutions to work very effectively together, and hence using branded solutions is not a bad thing in the end.
One last thing: if you have pets and constantly need to clean up messes, you may need to look for another model that is made specifically for that purpose. Although this cleaner can remove some pet mishaps, especially using a pet solution, you would be better off with another, more powerful or specialized carpet cleaner.
Verdict
- Lightweight, low priced carpet cleaner
- Good cleaning performance with 4 rows of rotating power brushes
- 2 in 1 water tank makes emptying/refilling a breeze
- Ideal for elder people and/or those with physical problems like back pains
- Not as powerful as the most advanced models on the market
- Kind of a beginner level carpet cleaner with no furniture attachments
- Smaller tank sizes requires more trips to empty/refill the tank
