SPT SD-71E Dehumidifier Review

The SPT SD-71E Dehumidifier effectively removes unwanted moisture from the air and condenses it into water for an easy removal, both quickly and efficiently. This prevents the moisture from forming mold and mildew within your home, and provides full protection from unwanted bacteria. With advanced features like the Memory IC, continuous dehumidifying and continuous drainage, the SD-71E offers good value for the price.

Features:

  • Collects up to 70 pints of water in a day.
  • Has the option to use Continuous Dehumidifying between 35-85% humidity.
  • Has an alarm indicator to notify you when the water collector is full and needs to be emptied.
  • Includes Memory IC which remembers the previous setting that you last had it on, and puts it onto this automatically when you turn it back on.
  • Also has the option for Continuous Drainage Option, when near a suitable drain, which will require you to buy a hose.
  • A weight of 40lbs.

Powerful Performance

SD-71E has no problem keeping the humidity below 45% in most spaces. Unless the room/basement you are using the dehumidifier in is extremely humid, the results will be satisfactory. And for those extremely damp spaces, you can use the turbo fan mode to remove the bulk of the excess humidity and then continue using the machine to easily keep the humidity below 50%.

Smart Auto Restart

SD71-E is equipped with a smart auto restart feature which makes it pretty much set and forget. Even if the power goes out, you will never have to remember to turn it back on since it will restart when the power is back on. It will then continue working until reaching the desired humidity level set by the user.

Continuous and ON/OFF Mode Options

You can set the SD71-E to work on continuous mode or have it remove excess humidity and shut off when the desired level is reached. These separate options are nice to have since spaces inside the house may require different modes and this model is suited for use in both very humid spaces that may require constant dehumidifying or less damp areas where a few hours with the turbo mode will be enough.

Turbo Fan

If you need a quick solution to normalize an extremely humid basement/space, the turbo mode will be a life-saver as it can remove quite a lot of humidity in a short period of time. You can then set the level you want and let the machine work normally from there.

Defrost Cycle

Good news for those living in cold areas or those who have to leave the dehumidifier idle for quite some time to have frost build up on coils. The dehumidifier’s auto defrost cycle will remove the frost from the coils by turning off the compressor and running the fan until the frost is removed. After that, the unit will continue to work normally.

Smart Bucket Design with a flaw!

The 6 litre (about 3 gallons) bucket inside the SPT SD-71E is designed very smartly. The unit stops before the bucket is filled completely by leaving about 4 inches from the top to prevent accidental spilling and to make it easy to carry and empty the bucket. The handle on the bucket is also smartly placed, making it easy to carry with only one hand.

With that said, leaving very little space to lift the bucket is definitely a design error. If you find that you have a hard time taking the bucket out (especially when it’s almost completely full), you can try using the continuous drainage system instead.

Continuous Drain System

The continuous drain system allows using the dehumidifier without constantly emptying the bucket. However, you should know that the machine does not use a pump for the drain. It relies on gravity to carry the water from the reservoir into the drain, so you need to make sure that the drainage hole is below the dehumidifier.

Quiet Operation

The manufacturer rates the SD-71E with a noise level of about 60dB and our tests (also the reports from other users) show that this figure is quite accurate.

To put it in layman’s terms, you will definitely hear the dehumidifier work but it won’t make more sound than a big floor fan. What’s more, the noise is quite easy to get used to that it will become sort of a white noise after a few minutes when you first activate it. You can also set the device on a pad to muffle the noise even further.

Pros
  • One main advantage of this is that it has an option to work at normal speed, as well as turbo speed, which removes the moisture in the air even quicker.
  • The air filter that removes the moisture can also be easily taken out for cleaning without any problems.
  • Designed with wheel casters for easy mobility.
  • Also includes a built-in timer, so that you have it working even when you are not in, this means there is absolutely no chance of any mold or mildew growing.
  • This Dehumidifier is also quite when compared to other similar priced ones, however please note that it is louder when on turbo speed.
Cons
  • One of the biggest downfalls is that the bucket to collect the water in can be very difficult to take in and out, there is also no extra room in the bucket when it is full, so this can result in the water spilling onto the floor, which is a major design flaw.
  • The Continuous Drainage Option, as with every other Dehumidifier, is also difficult to set up and requires a large amount of patience.
Verdict

All in all, this Dehumidifier has some very good features, such as the Memory IC, however there are some big design problems with this, especially to say it is one of the most expensive Dehumidifiers. I would only recommend buying this if you are going to use the Continuous Drainage Option, otherwise you will spill the water onto the floor every time you empty the Dehumidifier.
