Bissell SpotClean 3624 is one of the most affordable, efficient and easy to use spot cleaners currently offered on the market. Although it is more hands-on than some other spot-cleaners like the SpotBot Hands Free (which is also reviewed here), it makes up for it with a slightly superior cleaning performance.
If you need to spot clean carpets, stairs, car seats and any kind of upholstery and do not have a full-sized carpet cleaner (or do not want to haul it around every time there is a spot to be cleaned), SpotClean can actually be a very nice investment for your home. A simple machine that does the job very well with powerful suction and ease of use is a winning formula every time.
Now let us look at the details and answer your questions about SpotClean.
Features
- Superior suction power removes almost any stains you can think of
- Easily cleans hard to reach spots thanks to the 5 flex hose
- 6 inch stair tool for spot cleaning on your stairs
- 3 inch tough stain brush
- Easy to use, requires no assembly whatsoever
- 22 feet power cord
- 2-year limited warranty
Do the brushes rotate? Is this a hands-free cleaner?
The brushes do not rotate and you need to scrub to clean the surface. Therefore, it is not a hands-free cleaner, but it makes a very good job if you don’t mind the hassle.
My experience is that better cleaning power is the reward for going with such a hands-on machine rather than a hands-free cleaner like Bissel SpotBot. The difference is not too big to ignore the hands-free models, but if you want a slightly better cleaning performance with a little bit of effort, I would recommend this one.
Can it be used for cars?
Yes, definitely. It can not only remove stains and clean any spots, but you can also use it to clean the seats, carpets, door panels, etc. Just make sure you vacuum all the water up when you finished cleaning to prevent any damage due to extended dampness. Bissell also offers an automotive crevice tool that you can use to clean harder-to-reach spots in your car.
All in all, definitely a better choice for cars than full-sized carpet cleaners.
Is it heavy? Is it hard to lift and move around?
SpotClean is a truly portable unit. In fact, it’s one of the selling points, and it’s definitely not heavier than a regular vacuum and pretty easy to lift and move around even when it’s fully filled with water and cleaning solution.
Can I clean all kinds of furniture with it?
Although it is sold as a spot cleaner/remover, you can clean your entire couch, chairs, steps, sofas, etc. with it. The one thing you need to make sure is not to use too much water since it could be very hard to dry for certain kinds of fabric. But other than that, I see no reason why you can’t use it to clean furniture with it. In fact, you can clean multiple pieces with a single tank.
Is this for spot removal only or can I clean say area rugs with it?
Like I said, you can clean bigger surfaces with the SpotClean Portable, but when it comes to carpets, I would go with a regular sized cleaning machine rather than this one.
Don’t get me wrong though. You can definitely clean whole carpets with it. It would just be too much of a hassle in my opinion, and that’s all.
How long does it take for upholstery/carpets to dry?
In average, you should give it at least 3 to 4 hours to dry completely as the machine will leave the surface quite damp unless you go over the spot you cleaned with water extraction multiple times.
This takes longer to dry than full-sized, more powerful carpet cleaners, but the good thing is that the damp/wet area will be smaller if you use it for spot cleaning. You can also use fans and/or lay towels to help speed up the drying process.
You should also be careful not to use too much water when cleaning upholstery since it tends to absorb more water than a regular carpet.
Is it easy to clean the attachment hose and tool? Does it accumulate too much dirt/hair?
You can’t open the head for cleaning but it is pretty easy to clean the hose and the tool by simply sucking clean water as recommended in the user manual. I wish the head could actually open for easier cleaning, but it’s not a deal-breaker since it’s definitely not hard to clean it with the recommended method.
Does is spurt water from the sides?
If you have read my other reviews, you may already know that water spurts are very annoying for me, and thankfully Bissell 3624 doesn’t do that. It just releases water and detergent from the bottom where it contacts the cleaning surface.
Will it really remove hard stains like pet urine, coffee, red wine, etc.?
As long as the stain can be removed, the 3624 will remove it! Simple as that. Of course, the older the stain, the harder it will be to remove, but that goes for any carpet cleaner on the market.
Some stains may require you to use special solutions or pre-treat the spot, etc. but in the end, what counts is the machine’s ability to remove the stains, and this one does a very good job at that. Especially if you catch and clean the stain right away, you will definitely be pleased with the result. I have seen it remove coffee spills, red wine and pet urine without breaking a sweat.
Does it have a heater? Or do I add hot water?
No, it doesn’t have a heater. You simply add hot tap water. You can use the hottest water your tap can produce, but do not use boiling water.
Rating
- Efficient portable spot cleaner
- Superior suction power
- Easy to use and clean, no assembly required
- One of the best spot cleaners on the market
- Does not have heatwave technology
- Not a hands-free spot cleaner
- Carpets and upholstery make take a few hours to dry completely
My conclusion on the Bissell 3624 SpotClean Portable carpet cleaner is simple. If you want one of the best spot cleaners on the market and don’t mind the little effort (since it’s not hands-free), go for it. It will definitely provide more than enough value for the money.
