Detailed Review

SpinScrub Technology with 77 brushes

Hoover FH50240 comes with 11 spinscrub heads that contain 77 counter rotating brushes. In fact, that is why to model is called Max Extract 77 (as you may have guessed, Max Extract 60 has 60 rotating brushes). The number of brushes should tell something about the cleaning power of the machine, and its performance definitely reflects that. It removes all but the oldest and hardest of stains with a few passes. We can definitely attest to the fact that Hoover did a good job with this one.

Multiple cleaning modes for different carpets and stains

In addition to providing cleaning power, Hoover also considered the fact that not all carpets are alike, and that some need different cleaning methods than others. Hence, Max Extract 77 is equipped with three cleaning mode settings: Spill Pickup, Gentle Scrub and Power Scrub.

Edge to Edge cleaning with pressurized water

Max Extract 77 is equipped with an Edge to Edge cleaning system which basically involves applying pressurized water jets onto the carpet and does a good job cleaning even the hardest spots to clean like the edges.

MaxExtract DualV Nozzle Technology

The DualV Nozzle technology is one of Hoover’s special features that help the carpets dry faster after cleaning. The dual nozzle system is designed to provide more suction power than older models; although you would still need to use other methods like leaving windows open or using a fan to get the carpets to dry faster like you would with any other carpet cleaner model, this Hoover model provides above average results in that regard.

Dual Tank System – separate tanks for clean and dirty water

Like 90% of the carpet cleaners on the market (Bissell Proheat 2X being one of the exceptions), Max Extract is equipped with separate tanks for dirty and clean water. Although they call this system the Smart Tank system, we honestly couldn’t see anything different than the other models. With that said, the capacity is a little bit higher than most models (like 1.4 gallons as opposed to 1 gallon found in most machines). The tanks are easy enough to empty and refill, so no complaints there.

20% wider cleaning path

MaxExtract 77 offers a wider cleaning path when compared to original SteamVac models, meaning you can clean bigger spaces in less time and with fewer passes. Even if this isn’t something that affects the overall cleaning power of the machine, saving time while doing cleaning work isn’t something we would sneeze at, so it can definitely be considered a plus.

CleanSurge Technology

One of the best things about this Hoover model is the CleanSurge technology that allows applying extra power and detergent for tougher stains or more trafficked areas with a push of a button (which is conveniently placed at your fingertip by the way). We found that the difference in terms of cleaning power is quite apparent when using this technology; however, you should keep in mind that the machine will disperse a lot more detergent when using it, so make sure not to run it using the CleanSurge setting all the time.

Automatic Detergent System

The carpet cleaner is equipped with a separate detergent compartment that automatically mixes the detergent with water as necessary. The amount dispersed will depend on the setting you are using, but as it happens automatically, you don’t need to worry about the amount of detergent to use; you just select the cleaning mode and the machine does the rest automatically. We found this a smart design as it not only prevents using less detergent than required, hence avoiding sub-par cleaning results, but also preventing the user to use too much detergent unnecessarily.

AutoRinse Feature

Max Extract 77 comes with an auto-rinse feature that automatically removes detergent residue when you pull the machine backwards. While this is not a revolutionary technology, it still helps save time when cleaning carpets as you don’t need separate rinsing passes to complete the job. Most machines on the market dispense water when pushed and suck it back up when pulled, and the added rinsing feature is not a bad thing at all.

Hard Floor Attachment

You can also use the carpet cleaner to clean hard floors using the squeegee attachment. However, this is one of the areas where our review takes a negative turn. As a number of other users have reported, the squeegee attachment is not well-made, and you will definitely have a hard time keeping it in place. Unfortunately, we can’t recommend FH50240 if you are specifically looking for a carpet cleaner that can do a good job on hard floors as well. If that is the case, you may want to check out Bissell Big Green or Hoover’s PowerScrub model.

9-feet hose and 20-feet power cord

Although the length of the hose and cord provide enough reach, we didn’t like the fact that older models had longer hoses and power cords.

Leaking and Durability Problems

One of the biggest problems we have seen with Max Extract 77 is that a number of users were complaining that the machine was leaking from the bottom. While we have not witnessed this, a brief research showed that there were multiple complaints on various sites. It appears that the problem can be due to overfilling the clean water tank (which can be easily avoided) and/or using other detergents than the original Hoover solutions recommended by the manufacturer. So, if you plan to use cheaper or homemade solutions instead of Hoover solutions, you should beware that you may end up with a leaking machine.

Another complaint we have seen from more than one user was that the machine stopped working after a certain period of time; however, the common thread in most of these complaints was that the users in question actually bought and used refurbished models, so we would advise against that.

Bissell Proheat 2X Premier Full-Size Carpet Cleaner model 47A23 is one of the outstanding carpet washer models on the market, especially if you consider the value it provides for the money. Bissell 47A23 offers above average suction and cleaning for a very affordable price, and it’s up to par with far more expensive models like the Big Green Machine.

Despite a few shortcomings that we will mention in detail, the Proheat 2X is up to bar with some of the best carpet washer models we have reviewed so far, and can be a very good alternative if you are looking for an efficient carpet cleaning machine that will remove all but the hardest of stains on your carpets.

General Performance

First things first; Bissell Proheat 2x Premier is very easy to assemble except for the upper hose rack which needs to be screwed at the bottom; you will need a short screwdriver to insert it without spending too much time and effort.

While it is a bit heavier than some of the other models, it is also more efficient at removing stains and cleans with fewer passes. In terms of cleaning performance, it can go toe to toe with high profile models like Bissell Big Green and Hoover PowerScrub.

It is very easy to use; you just spray by pushing the carpet cleaner forward and then suck the water back up by pulling it back.

No matter how humid is your area, the carpets will be completely dry after about 8 hours even if you don’t do enough suction passes.

Unlike most carpet cleaners on the market, Proheat 2X has only one tank for clean and dirty water; the dirty water is sucked into the separate area surrounding the clean water bladder within the tank.

The single tank design can make it hard to see if the tank is full sometimes, and it causes suction problems a few users are complaining about. But once you get used to the machine and the frequency with which the tank gets full, you will see that the suction is better than most carpet washers on the market.

Another thing that affects suction power is the need to keep the machine locked in the upright position. If you tilt the handle even slightly, Proheat will lose suction power. Even if this seems to be a very simple thing, it can be a problem for some people, so we thought it would be helpful to mention here. The instructions on the user manual are not very clear about this, so you would be better off if you knew this before purchasing and using the machine.

Another good thing about the 47A23 is that the upholstery tool works great in removing any kind of stains from coaches, chairs etc. including pet mishaps. Proheat also uses much less cleaner solutions than commercial units, providing significant savings over time.

Now, we know that you have a few questions about the Bissell Proheat 2X, and we will try to answer the most common of these questions as part of our review.

Questions and Answers

Does it have a heater? Can I use cold water with it?

Contrary to what most people believe, using hot water for removing pet urine is not such a good idea. Hot water can make the stain and odor settle even more, and you would be better off using cold water to clean pet urine. Just put cold water in it and the “heat wave technology” won’t heat it up. It can maintain heat in hot water, but really doesn’t have the power to heat cold water to hot.

Does it work on hard floors?

Yes, Bissell has a hard floor attachment that you can fix at the bottom of the machine and use it to clean hard floors in addition to cleaning carpets.

How powerful is the motor?

Bissell Proheat 2X Premier has a 6.2 amp motor.

Are the bristles easy to clean after use?

There is a locking knob that keeps the bristles and the front nozzle in place. When you turn it to unlock them, you can easily access the bristles and nozzle and clean them without hassle.

What about cleaning the rest of the machine?

The only part that is hard to clean is the bladder since the dirty water sucked into it makes it a bit messy, especially if you have pets and the machine sucks in pet hair from the carpet. You will need some kind of tool to get into the crevices and clean any dirt and hair.

How long does it take for the carpets to dry after cleaning?

As with all other carpet cleaners, this depends on a few factors including the relative humidity in the room, the amount of water you dumped onto the carpet and the number of suction passes you made. But in any case, it wouldn’t take longer than 8 hours even if all these factors are negative. You can always use a box or ceiling fan to speed up the drying process.

How does it work on area rugs?

Generally, Proheat 2X 47A23 does a very good job on area rugs. The one thing you need to be careful about is that it won’t be able to effectively suck the water back up if the rug is too thin. But if it’s thick, then it will do a wonderful job. And to be fair, most other carpet washers on the market would have a hard time drying thin area rugs.

The audio distance information feature that actually speaks the distance out loud is a very nice touch (and the reason why the unit is called Voice GPS) as it makes it unnecessary to look at the screen to see the distance measured.

As it comes pre-loaded with more than 33,000 worldwide courses, chances are you will find your favorite golf courses already loaded even if you happen to travel a lot and play in different courses all the time. In terms of performance and reliability (as you will read in more detail below), it is definitely up to par with most of the Golf GPS and rangefinder devices we reviewed so far.

GolfBuddy Voice GPS may not look like much at first sight, but it provides distance measuring performance and accuracy on par with other GPS units or even more robust and costly rangefinders. Our checks (in addition to many users who reported similar experiences), have shown that this little GPS device is very good at measuring the yardage to the target.

The Voice Factor

One of the good things about the GolfBuddy Voice GPS is… wait for it… yes, the voice part. Whenever you need to measure the distance to a target (like the front or the back of the green), all you need to do is to press a button; it will calculate and tell you the distance. No need to look into the screen at all. And the best part is that while the voice is loud enough to be easily heard, it’s not too loud to be distracting during the game.

The Form Factor

Another factor that makes this GolfBuddy model very attractive for golfers is the size and portability. The Voice GPS can easily be clipped onto your belt or even hat (not to mention it fits your pocket). Being able to carry it around on your belt and remembering it was there only when you need to use it is definitely a plus in our opinion as it eliminates an annoying distraction that some of the other Golf GPS devices on the market may cause.

Additional Features

In addition to its core functionality, GolfBuddy offers two more functions. One is the ability to rotate the shape of the green according to your approach angle, and the other is the ability to measure the distance between two points (called shot distance measurement). Although the first function is not very impressive (due to the somewhat low quality of the interface, the latter is actually very impressive and useful.

You can easily determine how far you have hit by simply pressing the button on the side (and then then main button), make the hit and walk to the ball. When you get to the ball, you press the main button again and voila, you have just measured how far you hit the ball. This can be a very useful piece of information in the long run as you start to understand the distance you can cover with each shot (and figure out how hard you need to hit to get to the target).

It has everything you need for your daily cooking. The set includes two saucepans, a stock pot and a skillet made of the very versatile, durable Stainless Steel. Unless you need a 10 or 12 piece stainless steel set like the other cookware sets we reviewed here, going with the 77-7 will not disappoint at all.

Performance and Usage

Excellent Heat Distribution

The bases of the Cuisinart 77-7 Chef’s Classic Stainless 7-Piece Cookware Set have an encapsulated aluminum layer which heats quickly, transmits heat faster than Stainless Steel and helps spread heat evenly. This eliminates heat spots and food cooks better.

Not suitable for use on induction cook-tops

The Cuisinart 77-7 is not safe for use on induction cook-tops, but to be frank, no other stainless steel set is. You would need at least a cast iron set if you want induction cooking.

There is one small tip we can give you though: if you have an induction cooker and definitely want to use a set like this, you may try to use an iron plate placed between the cooktop and the pot/pan and use it that way.

However, you should be aware that this approach kind of defies the whole advantage of using an induction cooker (as it won’t allow quick heating or temperature control as it would with cast iron sets).

Safe to use on Ceramic Stoves

All the pans in the 77-7 have smooth bottoms, so they can safely be used on ceramic stoves (even those with glass tops).

Interchangeable Lids 

Yes, it is the perfect size for the fry pan. I think the fry pan is my favorite. Wonderful for fresh vegetables. I cook with coconut oil, works great with the fry pan.

One of the nice features of 77-7 Chef’s Classic is that you can use the 8 quart stockpot’s lid for the 10” frying pan as it will fit very nicely. This makes the set even more convenient and affordable since you won’t need to source an extra lid for the pan.

Easy to clean

The set is easy to clean with a few common sense-based precautions. As these are not non-stick pots and pans, you need to take a few steps to make sure food doesn’t get stuck. One of these little steps is to simply heat the pan before you add oil and actually start cooking. As long as you keep this simple precaution in mind, the set will not cause any problems in that regard.

However, if you forget it and get food stuck, you simply need to pour in water and reheat the pan. The important thing here is to remember that you need to do it almost immediately as if you wait for a long period of time, you will most likely need a solution like Cameo or Barkeeper’s Friend to clean it.

PFOA Free

The set is made of stainless steel and since there is no coating whatsoever, it is completely free from chemicals. This is one of the biggest advantages of such sets against most non-stick sets, and why most people (including us) prefer using them.

The handles are cool to hold

The handles are made of cast Stainless Steel which does not heat quickly and stay cool even while the rest of the pot is hot while on the stovetop. They are contoured for a better firmer grip of the heavy pot.

The food tastes better

Now, let us move to the problems.

One of the bad things about Rug Doctor portable is the noise level. The machine produces quite a high volume of noise, especially when you consider the size. Although part of the noise is due to the overall wattage and suction power of the motor, you may still find the noise level a bit distracting if not disturbing. However, the cleaning and suction power provided in return may as well make up for the discomfort. One little tip: you can use one of the earplugs generally used for leaf blowers and such if you are too uncomfortable with the noise.

Another problem, albeit small, is the fact that most users do not notice that there is an always-open hole on the top of the dirty water tank which will cause water to spill if you don’t take notice and be careful.

Some users reported that the machine loses suction after a certain amount of time. We have found out that this is due to the dirty water being full up to 2/3rds and if you empty the tank once it reaches that point you won’t lose any suction power at all.
